Azorean Maritime Heritage Society

The Society has constructed two Azorean whaleboats, the Fayal and the Pico, displaying and sailing them throughout the region. These sleek and colorful craft function as distinctive cultural ambassadors, raising awareness and pride within the Azorean community on both sides of the Atlantic. Founded in New Bedford in 1997, the Society works in partnership with the New Bedford Whaling Museum to preserve the contributions of the Azoreans to American whaling in the Whaling Museum’s Azorean Whaleman Gallery. Membership in six categories is open to all.

Charlton Historical Society

The Rider Tavern is the centerpiece of the Town of Charlton's Northside Historic District. Completed in 1799, the tavern is a well-documented Federal period inn that has been restored over the last 30 years by volunteers. Nearby are the town of Charlton's Number 2 Schoolhouse (also open for tours by appointment through the Charlton Historical Society, militia lot where General Lafayette reviewed the troops in 1824, and the boyhood home of Dr. William T. G. Morton, the first to publicly demonstrate the use of ether as an anesthetic.

Berlin Farms, a quintessential New England farmstead circa 1867 that is protected under deeded conservation, specializes in the care and breeding of endangered barnyard animals. These heritage breeds, some indigenous and some brought to North American by the Early Settlers, are now struggling due to the commercialization of farming and overall reduction in number of farming households. Berlin Farms is working to conserve historic breeds and genetic diversity in livestock, helping to bring breeds off the endangered list to the recovering list through grass-roots efforts.

The Waltham Historical Society

Several prominent Waltham businessmen gathered together in 1913 and founded an historical society to preserve and promote the history of their City. The dozen or so Charter Members have grown to over 300 in the intervening years. The predominantly Yankee Society has expanded to include every ethnic group which settled in the City, and welcomes recent immigrants to learn about their new home. Currently the Waltham Historical Society presents a lecture every other month on either an aspect of Waltham history, or how Waltham fits into the Nation’s history. Through the generosity of Mr. Fred Kimberk, office space at 760 Main Street has allowed us to open an exhibit area to display photos and artifacts from our collection.
