Blandy Experimental Farm is a 700-acre University of Virginia research facility situated in the northern Shenandoah Valley,about 10 miles east of Winchester and 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. Blandy Experimental Farm is also the home of the State Arboretum of Virginia, displaying more than 8,000 trees and woody shrubs. The collections include more than half the world’s pine species, the Virginia Native Plant Trail, the Boxwood Memorial Garden, a spectacular grove of more than 300 ginkgo trees, an herb garden featuring culinary, medicinal and ornamental herbs, and much more.

The D. Ralph Hostetter Museum of Natural History, was established in 1968. It is available free to the public on select Sundays. It houses more than 6,000 items, including anthropology artifacts; botanical specimens; fossils; marine life; minerals; crystals and gems; rocks, fluorescent rocks and minerals. It also has mounted heads of American and African game mammals; East African birds; Virginia birds, nests and eggs; Virginia and international insects.

Included in 16 exhibit gardens along over 3 miles of trails through 125 acres of mature Oak-Hickory Forrest, are rare and unusual, or geographically specific species protected at the arboretum. See a shale barren rich with white-haired feather flower, spike moss, hairy lipped fern, and shining sumac. Browse the bog garden. Stroll paths redolent in the bloom of spring bulbs, native azaleas including the rare pinxter flower and flame azalea. See a luxurious display of trailside wild phlox and Virginia bluebell. Breathe deeply while climbing the terraced herb garden.

Lee Chapel and Museum

A National Historic Landmark, the Chapel opened in 1868 during Robert E. Lee's tenure as 11th president of then Washington College. Non-denominational and unconsecrated, the Chapel housed an auditorium, administrative offices, a YMCA, and a library. In 1928, a museum was installed in the basement. Today, that museum constitutes several gallery spaces with exhibitions on the history of the university.

The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia came into being in 1997 through a gift by American businessman, John W. Kluge. Influenced by the Dreamings exhibition in New York, Mr. Kluge began collecting Aboriginal art in 1988. Over the next decade he compiled one of the finest private collections of Australian Aboriginal art in the world. In 1993, Kluge purchased the collection and archives of the late Professor Edward L. Ruhe of Lawrence, Kansas. Ruhe began collecting Aboriginal art while visiting Australia as a Fulbright Scholar in 1965. He built a collection of the highest quality rivaling many museum collections in Australia and exhibited it widely in the United States between 1965 and 1977.
