Since its founding in 1966, the Abilene Zoo has stood as a place of learning an adventure. Open daily year-round, the lushly landscaped 16-acre park is home to more than 1,000 animals of more than 270 species. The new Giraffe Safari area includes a slate of African species, including the zoo's mascots: a herd of giraffe, which guests can hand-feed from a large raised deck. The Abilene Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, maintaining that level of excellence for more than 25 years.

Air Force Flight Test Center Museum

The Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) Museum is an Air Force Field Museum operating within the guidelines of the USAF Heritage Program. Its mission is to collect, interpret, preserve, and display the material history of the AFFTC, Edwards AFB and its antecedents, and the history of USAF flight testing. There are currently 80 aircraft in the museum’s collection, with 32 on display (29 at Edwards and three at the AFFTC-managed Blackbird Airpark in Palmdale) and the remainder in storage or restoration. Other artifacts in the collection include aircraft propulsion systems, missiles, hardware, life support equipment, technical drawings, test reports, personal memorabilia, photographs, and wind tunnel models.

Aerospace Museum of California

Since we opened the new Museum pavilion and air park in February 2007, over 250,000 visitors have come to view our unique collection of 40 military and civilian aircraft, the 15 restored engines on display, use the educational programs, and enjoy the Coast Guard art collection. Visitors see aircraft from a fully restored 1932 Curtiss-Wright "speed wing" biplane to an A-10 Warthog and engines including models from pre-World War I, the first jet engine, and a J-58 jet engine that powered the SR-71 Blackbird to 3 times the speed of sound. Our Aerospace Learning Center allows visitors to fly non-motion flight simulators or ride in a motion ride simulator.

AHA! A Hands-On Adventure, A Children's Museum

Air Force Space and Missile Museum

The physical location of the museum is not related to the mailing address. Mapping programs will not display actual location of the museum. The 45th Space Wing Public Affairs Office hosts a free historic bus tour for the general public the second Wednesday of each month. The three-hour tour includes visits to the Air Force Space and Missile Museum, historic launch pads and the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. The tour begins at 9:00 AM at the south gate of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Participants must meet directly across the street from the Pass & ID building no later than 8:45 AM. Call the 45th Space Wing Public Affairs Office at 321-494-5949 for information and reservations.

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site

The Allegheny Portage Railroad has many interesting things to see. Visit the Lemon House- a historic tavern built to accommodate travelers. Discover the Engine House- a replica of the many buildings that made up the Portage Railroad. Watch a movie in our visitor center and browse the many exhibits and models. Drive out to the Staple Bend Tunnel unit to hike and explore the nine hundred foot tunnel (remember you need to walk 2 miles each direction when visiting the tunnel).
