The Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society (CHAPS), Inc. was formed in 1969 by a group of citizens concerned about the rapid loss of Cherokee County's historical heritage to development and progress. The group now consists of nearly 250 members and has taken great strides to educate the public about the significance of and protect the county's numerous historical sites.

The Sumter County Museum is a private non-profit institution whose mission is to promote the history of Old Sumter District through the preservation and exhibition of objects, manuscripts, and documents, which relate the story of this area of South Carolina. The museum includes the Williams-Brice House (1916), the Heritage Education Center (2003) and the Carolina Backcountry Homestead.

The Powder Magazine

Charles Towne Landing SHS has undergone a visionary and physical redevelopment over the last 10 years. The physical redevelopment was highlighted in 2006 by the grand opening of a brand new exhibit hall and visitor center that tells the story of the first 10 years of the settlement of Charles Towne. As the first site of the original settlement of Charles Towne (Charleston), the site is an archaeological museum as well, with continuous excavations that slowly uncover clues to the first settlement's inhabitants. Animals that roamed Carolina at the time of English settlement are highlighted in the Animal Forest zoo. A new otter habitat opened to the public in April 2011.

Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site is a 106-acre outdoor museum complex and includes: the original town site of Camden, oldest inland town in SC, five historic buildings, some with exhibits, reconstructions of some of the Revolutionary War military fortifications and the Kershaw House, which served as British headquarters during the 1780-81 Southern Campaign.

The South Carolina Civil War Museum

The South Carolina Civil War Museum houses the collection of the artifacts gathered from the discovery of the Confederate States Navy's war effort in ship building at the Mars Bluff Confederate Naval Yard on the Great Peedee River; as well as recovered military artifacts from the Confederate Steamer/gunboat CSS PeeDee. The museum's collection governs all aspects of the American Civil War from political, homelife, financial, and military including army, navy, and marines, salt works, and the aftermath of reconstruction. The South Carolina Civil War Museum's well presented collection includes artifacts and equipment from the turbulent years of 1860-1865.

US Army Adjutant General's Corps Museum
