Description

Local history museum. Ten galleries plus 2 restored houses and blacksmith shop in adjacent park. Collections strong in military history, furniture, decorative arts.

History

The Greensboro Historical Museum was founded by volunteers in 1924. Its home since 1939 has been a former church building dating to 1892, a building since listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Accredited by the American Associations since 1984, the museum joined the Smithsonian Affliation program in 2006. Approximately 15,000 sq. ft. of exhibit galleries feature military history, early transportation, social and ethnic history, historic room interiors, early 20th- century Greensboro, Dolley Madison, O. Henry, Confederate firearms, and the 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins. Two historic houses, blacksmith shop, and woodworking shop are located in an adjacent park.
