Description

Located in Gastonia, North Carolina, the Schiele Museum has provided the community with exceptional educational resources and opportunities for exploration since its founding in 1961. Through the generosity of Bud and Lilly Schiele, the museum began with a collection of animals, and has expanded throughout the years to include a variety of exhibits, planetarium, nature trail, farm, and a Catawba Indian village. Accredited by the American Association of Museums and an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, The Schiele is a leading destination for students and families across the region.

Mission

The Schiele Museum of Natural History is committed to inspiring curiosity and understanding of science and the natural world through exceptional educational programs, exhibits, and research.

History

Rudolph M. (Bud) Schiele came to Gastonia, NC, in the 1920's as an executive with the Boy Scouts of America and was given the responsibility of developing the Piedmont Council of Boys Scouts. During that time, Mr. and Mrs. Schiele collected a wide variety of Native American rugs and pottery, and Mr. Schiele also became an accomplished taxidermist. After his retirement in 1959, Mr. and Mrs. Schiele offered to donate their collections and expertise for a museum if Gaston County would provide a building. Through the generous support of community leaders, the money was raised, and a 1,400 sq. ft. building was opened in 1961 on 2.2 acres. Throughout the years, The Schiele Museum has expanded to include indoor and outdoor exhibits, a nature trail, planetarium, and more.

Educational Programs

The Schiele Museum offers a variety of educational programs and events throughout the year as well as workshops for adults.
