History

Restored in 1970; open to the public by appointment only until 1992; now open daily. The vision of The Earle-Harrison House and The Gardens on 5th Street encompasses a fully accredited historic house museum surrounded by five acres of professionally developed and historically accurate gardens. The process of seeking accreditation began in 1995, and the development of the Gardens on 5th Street is currently underway.

A spring garden show in the Gardens on 5th Street is in its third year, and the annual Christmas on the Brazos continues to be a success. New programs are being planned, and student and docent programs are underway and are planned to be expanded.

Artifact Collections

The Earle-Harrison House Museum collects artifacts, written records, film, sound recordings, machine readable data, and other materials which document, reflect, and aid inunderstanding and interpreting the house built in 1858 and occupied by members of the Earle and Harrison families and now located at 1901 North Fifth Street in Waco, Texas. Other areas of interest include the lives of members of the Earle and Harrison families, the lives and contributions to the museum of those who restored the house and established its collections (especially Mrs. G. H. (Nell) Pape and Mrs. Maurice (Lavonia) Barnes), the creation of a family home and the various objects which would have been used by people typical of the class to which the Earle and Harrison families belonged before the year 1900, with special emphasis on the period between the years 1850-1900.

The main artifact of The Earle-Harrison House is the house itself. Contained within the house are some 3,000 artifacts.
