History

Dallas is home to the largest African-American museum in the Southwest. The African American Museum fosters appreciation and recognition for both the vital presence of black culture in contemporary culture and its influence in shaping Texas and America. Since its inception more than 20 years ago at Dallas' Bishop College, the museum has developed an impressive collection of African-American art. The museum also features one of the largest African American folk art collections in the nation.

The African American Museum now enters a new era at its home in the Dallas Fair Park community. Private donations and a Dallas city bond election provided for creation of the magnificent new museum building, which is prominently located at the Grand Avenue entrance to Fair Park.
