Description
The Library and Museum opens to the public on May 1, 2013.

The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum currently holds over 29,000 cubic feet of textual records (over 70 million pages) and 1200 cubic feet of audiovisual records. In addition to the textual and audiovisual materials, the Library has approximately 80 terabytes of electronic records - the largest electronic records collection in the Presidential Library system - including over 200 million email messages and nearly 4 million photographs.

The Museum features a permanent exhibit that uses artifacts, documents, photographs, and videos from the Library's extensive collection to capture the key decisions and events of the Presidency of George W. Bush. The permanent exhibit is framed on four themes: freedom, responsibility, opportunity and compassion. Interactive features, include a Decision Points Theater that allows visitors to learn even more about the decision-making process and policies. The Museum includes features, such as a full-sized Oval Office and a Texas Rose Garden.

Mission

The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum "serves as a resource for the study of the life and career of George W. Bush, while also promoting a better understanding of the Presidency, American history, and important issues of public policy. The Library and Museum accomplishes its mission by preserving and providing access to Presidential records and other donated collections, hosting public programs, creating educational initiatives, preserving artifacts, and producing innovative museum exhibits." - Mission Statement

Artifact Collections

The Museum at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum tells the story of the United States in an extraordinary time. Using artifacts, documents, photographs, and videos from the Library’s extensive collection, the 14,000 square foot Museum includes features, such as a full-sized Oval Office and a Texas Rose Garden. Interactive features in the permanent exhibition include a Decision Points Theater designed to take the visitor “inside” the decision-making process and policies developed during the Administration of President George W. Bush.

George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum Artifact Gallery – Rotate artifacts 360 degrees to explore some of the 43,000 gifts given to President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush by American citizens and foreign Heads of State.

Research Collections

The Library is the repository for textual, audiovisual, and electronic Presidential records created or received throughout the Administration of President George W. Bush as well as other donated collections:

Textual Materials: Over 70 million pages of textual Presidential materials are housed at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Learn more about the Library’s textual holdings and explore the document gallery.
Archived White House Website: In January 2009, the White House archived its website as a way to preserve the online presence of the Administration of President George W. Bush.
Audiovisual Materials: The Presidential records include the audiovisual materials from the White House Photo Office. Learn more about the Library’s audiovisual holdings, find out how to place an order, and view the photograph galleries.
Electronic Records: The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum holds approximately 80 terabytes of electronic records - the largest electronic records collection of any Presidential Library.
Gubernatorial Records: While the official gubernatorial records of Texas Governor George W. Bush are now housed at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the records are the property of the State of Texas, the responsibility of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and subject to the Texas Public Information Act. Certain records will require review and redaction or removal by archivists of the Commission prior to use by researchers.

Library

The Library and Museum, features a Presidential records research center, multiple classrooms, and exhibit galleries, is housed in the George W. Bush Presidential Center located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Manhattan Construction Company is providing construction management services and Robert A. M. Stern Architects designed the Center.
