Marvel at aviation innovations in our collection of more than 250 historic airplanes. Spend time in one of our five movie theaters. Take a ride in a vintage airplane at Pioneer Airport—a real working aerodrome right out of the “golden age” of aviation. Witness a piece of history in the Eagle Hangar, our tribute to World War II aviation. And get “hands on” in KidVenture Gallery, our exciting interactive gallery for kids of all ages!
The heart and soul of any good museum is its collection, and the EAA AirVenture Museum is no exception. Our collection of historic artifacts began in 1962 when Steve Wittman donated his famous air racer “Bonzo” (pictured right) and the EAA Air Museum was founded. During the summer months (May-October), a short tram ride from the museum takes you to Pioneer Airport, our unique “living history” re-creation of what airports were like during the early days of air travel. It brings back a time when the magic of flying astounded and charmed the whole world.
More than 50 vintage airplanes are displayed in seven period hangars designed to take you back to aviation’s “Golden Age” of the 1920’s and 30’s. Fascinating displays include a tribute to the legendary air racer, designer, and builder Steve Wittman. Younger visitors will enjoy a play area with swings and pedal planes. For kids aged between 8 and 17, a free Young Eagles airplane flight may be available.
Most important of all, Pioneer Airport is a place to savor the sights and sounds of vintage flying machines in their “natural habitat.” Weather permitting, flights take place from Pioneer Airport’s grass runway every day during the season.
Pioneer Airport is open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from the first weekend in May until the second weekend in October. From Memorial Day to Labor Day it is open 7 days a week. Extended opening hours are in effect during the AirVenture fly-in, and at other times by special arrangement.
